She is said to have adopted 5 baby oryxes, one after the other (one died), before she went absconding.

During my recent trip to Bhadra reservoir, after returning from the safari, the six of us sat around a table and narrated interesting wildlife stories that we had seen on TV or heard from others or experienced (only 1 guy fell into this category). We were totally engrossed in our conversation and in high spirits.
When it was my turn, I started to narrate this story. Suddenly the noise level around us dropped and I had to lower my voice. Yet it seemed to fill the hall. I realized that people at other tables had stopped eating/drinking/chatting and were listening to me intently. Yet I carried on, seemingly unaware of the situation. Inside, I was so happy to be 'holding court'.
